Mary, Joseph and three angels

Adriaen van Wesel (c. 1417-after 1490), Utrecht, 1475-1477, oak, stripped of polychromy

These figures were part of a large altar in the chapel of the Confraternity of Our Lady in ‘s Hertogenbosch. This was a highly innovative altar, with its lively, expressive scenes and figures. Five fragments are arranged here in their original order. The adoration of the newborn Child (now missing) by the Virgin, Joseph and the angels was at the very centre of the altar.
