1. The cookies we use and the purposes

The cookies used by the Rijksmuseum can be divided into two types:

  • Functional cookies - These are the cookies that are indispensable for the proper functioning of our website.
  • Other types of cookies - In addition, the Rijksmuseum uses cookies to see if this is your first visit to the website outside the home page (to display the logo and to have it fade out). The Rijksmuseum also uses cookies to keep track of web statistics by using Google Analytics. We also use social media functionality so pages can be easily shared.

  • Function and purpose: This is a security cookie (an anti-forgery cookie) that ensures that it is impossible to place content on the Rijksmuseum website without the consent of the Rijksmuseum (Cross-Site Request Forgery).   • Type: First party cookie
  • Function and purpose: This cookie is set by Google Analytics during the first visit. If the cookie has been deleted, a new cookie will be placed with a new unique ID. Google Analytics is a web analysis service provided by Google Inc. The Rijksmuseum gains insight into website and or webshop visits through these cookies. Insights include visitor numbers and popular pages and topics. As a result, the Rijksmuseum is able to better tailor its communication to the needs of website visitors. The Rijksmuseum cannot see who (which pc) is visiting their website. The cookie is updated with each visit. The unique ID in this cookie is used by Google Analytics to determine the authenticity of the visit.
  • Duration: The _ga cookie is stored for two years. The _gid cookie is stored for 24 hours.

  • Type: First party cookie
  • Function and purpose: The purpose of this cookie is throtteling for the proper functioning of our website and Google Analytics. It is stored during the first visit to the website or webshop and will be updated during subsequent visits. The Rijksmuseum does not use Google Analytics to collect personal data other than the IP address (first 2 numbers) of the visitor.
  • Duration: This cookie is stored for 1 minute.

  • Function and purpose: Login from users via Facebook on the Rijksmuseum website.
  • Duration: The fblo_ cookie is stored for 6 months. The fbm_ cookie is stored for 3 months.

  • Function and purpose: To collect technical data about the performance of the website.
  • Duration: The _ai_user, cookie is stored for 4 months. The ai_session cookie is stored for 1 minute.

  • Function and purpose: This cookie is used to link a user session to an order (server-side logging).
  • Duration: The Rmtc, cookie: infinite. The rmfv cookie is stored for the duration of 1 month.
