Sensory-friendly evening for families

A quieter setting for family visits

These evening openings have been designed especially for families with children who have a sensory processing disorder resulting from autism, brain damage or illness, for example. The museum will be much less busy than usual for the entire evening, with sensory stimulation reduced to an absolute minimum.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Open from 17:15 to 20h (after regular hours)
  • 17th- and 19th-century galleries only
  • Lights dimmed in the Atrium
  • Few visitors
  • Access to quiet take-a-break room with seating
  • Reception by trained hosts
  • Stools available for use in the galleries
  • Sensory-friendly guided tours

SENSORY-FRIENDLY GUIDED TOUR FOR FAMILIES

This tour is for families with children age 6 to 12, at least one of whom has a sensory stimulus disorder. Brothers and sisters are welcome to come along to, of course. That means the whole family can now enjoy a guided tour in a way that wouldn’t be possible during normal opening hours due to the overstimulating setting.

Each family will be accompanied by a single tour guide. The maximum group size is six (with no more than 4 adults). The price of the tour is €30.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The sensory-friendly evenings are designed for children who are unable to visit during regular opening due to the overstimulation this would cause them. We are organising these special openings in good faith, on the assumption that this opportunity will not be misused. Eligible children may be accompanied by family members or support persons.

If you or your child do not have a sensory processing disorder but you would like some tips about how to make your visit to the museum as calm as possible, read our tips for a more quieter museum visit. Another option is to book a guided tour for families with children with special needs.

Wheelchair accessible toilets

There are wheelchair accessible toilets with a low sink.

Changing room

The changing room is equipped with a mobile hoist, a bed and a washbasin. There is no toilet in the room. A staff member at the information desk will be happy to show you the way.
