Van Leyden Collection
The ‘Princely’ Print Collection of Pieter Cornelis van Leyden (1717-1788) and the founding of the National Print Room
Wealth, expertise and a European network enabled Pieter Cornelis van Leyden to assemble a collection of more than 50,000 prints. This project will cover both the history of the collection and that of print connoisseurship.
about the Project
In around 50 years the Leiden patrician put together an almost complete comprehensive view of Dutch, Italian, French, German and English printmaking that rivalled royal collections of the day. The creation of large print collections went hand in hand with advances in connoisseurship, which is reflected in the extensive documentation of the Van Leyden Collection, consisting of inventories, excerpts from European art literature and correspondence with dealers and connoisseurs at home and abroad. The research sheds a light on the formation of the collection and of the collector’s rise to become an internationally famous expert on printmaking.
aim of the project
The Van Leyden Collection was bought in 1807 by King Louis Napoleon for the Dutch Royal Library and went on to form the basis for the later Rijksprentenkabinet (National Printroom). Research into the early history of our national collection of prints and drawings will result in a doctoral dissertation in the framework of the project titled ‘The Artistic Taste of Nations. Art Collecting School Classification and the Identity Formation in Western Europe, 1600-1800’ at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. It will also form the basis for a survey exhibition with catalogue in the Rijksmuseum in 2024. In addition to highlights from the print collection the exhibition will contain examples from Van Leyden’s choice but dispersed collection of paintings.
