Study of a tree trunk

Jacques de Gheyn II (1565-1629), black chalk, pen and brown ink on cartridge paper, c. 1600-1605

Jacques de Gheyn regularly ventured out into nature, taking chalk and paper with him. On one of his walks he recorded the contours of this tree with just a few black chalk lines. Once back in his studio, De Gheyn worked up the sketch further with pen and ink.
