Four studies of a frog

Jacques de Gheyn II (1565–1629), paper, ink, 1575–1625

Jacques de Gheyn possibly made these studies of a frog during a dissection. He was clearly fascinated by the animal and his depiction is very lifelike. The shadows reinforce the realism. At the same time, the drawing attests to a scientific curiosity about the animal’s anatomy.
