It Takes Strong Legs to Carry Luxury

Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne (c. 1589–1662), red chalk, c. 1625

Being short of money may be unpleasant, but having too much of it causes its own problems. This drawing is a literal illustration of an Old Dutch saying, which translates as: ‘It takes strong legs to carry luxury’. Moral strength is needed to be able to support the burden of worldly riches.
