Departure of Charles II from Scheveningen
Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne (c.1589–1662), pen and brown ink, with grey wash, heightened with white, over black chalk, 1660
With the Restoration of the English monarchy in 1660, Charles II returned from nine years in exile on the Continent. On 23 May he left the Mauritshuis in The Hague and made his way to the beach at Scheveningen, whence his ship – previously called the Naseby but rechristened the Charles for the occasion – sailed for England.
