The aim of this one-day symposium was to present and discuss the outcomes of recent research initiatives, with input from invited experts, for an assessment of the advancing field of glass deterioration studies.

Recent research initiatives have given us new insights into the degradation processes, conservation practice and early identification of vulnerable glass objects. Accordingly, questions related to the degradation mechanisms and to the conservation of the glass objects themselves have come to light as well.

Programme

The following topics will be addressed during the symposium:

  • Chemical and physical processes of glass degradation in the museum environment;
  • Predicting glass instability;
  • Selecting suitable preventive conservation parameters and appropriate conservation treatments. Through interactive discussions we intend to map the state of the art of historic glass degradation studies, identify pivotal questions present within the communities involved with historic glass degradation, and start defining priorities for future lines of research.
