Van Bengalen
Shipped to Batavia, Banda, Cape Town and Dokkum
The people enslaved around the Bay of Bengal were given a new name by the slave owner, referring to the place where they were sold. They were stripped of their personality, their name, because they were perceived as objects.
IN THE RIJKSMUSEUM AND AT HOME
- Do you know where you come from?
- Do you know where your parents and ancestors come from?
- Does your family history determine who you are today?
- How did you become the person you are now?
- What do you want to leave behind?
- What do you want to pass on to the next generation?
- How do you want to be remembered?
Make your own family crest and we will hang it on the Van Bengal ‘family tree.’ How you go about this and what you use are up to you. Think about materials and colours.
