DISPLAYS IN THE ASIAN PAVILION

April en October 2023

In 2023, the Asian Pavilion is placing its focus on painting. The 12 hanging scroll paintings on display from 19 April will show how artists from China and Japan see nature: from majestic landscapes to intimate ‘portraits’ of plants, flowers and animals. Another display will present the generous gift of modern painted fans from the Taiwanese artist Yi-Tsai Chiang. His work engages in dialogue with the old masters and offers a modern interpretation of the genre in a great variety of styles. The display of Buddhist paintings and spontaneous Zen calligraphy will reveal how paintings were used in Asia in rituals and as study materials for devotees wishing to further develop their spirituality.

RICHARD LONG IN THE RIJKSMUSEUM GARDENS

24 May – 29 October 2023

We have invited British artist Richard Long for the 10th edition of our annual sculpture exhibition. Richard Long (b. 1945) is one of the world’s leading land artists. His body of work comprises a variety of subtle interventions in landscapes that he explores by foot, often in the remotest regions of the world. His approach is perhaps best illustrated by one of his earliest sculptures, A Line Made by Walking, which he made in 1967 by walking repeatedly along the same line in a field of grass.

The exhibition Richard Long in the Rijksmuseum Gardens is made possible with the support of the Don Quixote Foundation/Rijksmuseum Fonds, Pon and the Rijksmuseum Club.

The display features the work of artists such as of Pieter Hugo, Viviane Sassen, Ruud van Empel, Michael Wolf and Erwin Olaf.

MISSION MASTERPIECE

29 June – 3 September 2023

How does a work of art earn its place at the Rijksmuseum? How do you decide?
In this interactive exhibition, our younger visitors will become investigators in a museum that’s been transformed into a laboratory. Mission: Masterpiece will see families going on a mission to find answers to this question: What makes a masterpiece? They’ll use the most up-to-date research techniques and equipment to find out more about the makeup and authenticity of centuries-old artworks including furniture, paintings, porcelain and clothing.

Mission Masterpiece is developed in partnership with Nemo Science Museum and is made possible in part by ING, KPN, AkzoNobel, Stichting Zabawas and the Rijksmuseum Fonds.

Document Nederland: Mounir Raji photographs tourism

28 September 2023 – 14 January 2024

Each year since 1975, the Rijksmuseum has invited a Dutch photographer to document a topical social issue. Together, these series form a powerful visual history of the Netherlands. For Document Nederland 2023, the Rijksmuseum commissioned Mounir Raji to explore the theme of tourism. The tourist sector was hit hard by the global pandemic, but it seemed to recover in summer 2022. Who are the tourists out searching with renewed passion for ‘unique experiences’ to ‘make memories'? Mounir Raji (b. 1982) is a photographer, image-maker and researcher known for images rooted in realism and warmth.
