Over the past 15 years, work by renowned international photographers such as László Moholy-Nagy, Germaine Krull, William Klein and Helen Levitt have entered the Rijksmuseum collection thanks to the law firm Baker McKenzie. And in the coming five years, Baker McKenzie will continue to be involved in enriching the photographic collection and supporting activities such as the retrospective of American photography from 1839 to the present day, which is currently being prepared by the Rijksmuseum.

Corinne Schot, Baker McKenzie's managing partner: Our partnership with the Rijksmuseum, and the photography collection in particular, is close to my heart – and many of our clients and staff feel the same way. The past year has only made clearer the importance for society of arts and culture, and the connections between people that arise from them. We are very proud, then, particularly in these times, to be extending our support for a longer period.

Thanks to Baker McKenzie

Baker McKenzie supports the Rijksmuseum in its acquisition of 20th century photography, particularly 20th-century photography and American photography. As a committed sponsor of the Rijksmuseum, over the last 15 years the law firm has enabled it to buy 375 photographs made in in the 20th century. They include the work of Jacques Henri Lartigue, Lewis Hine, László Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, Ben Shahn, Eva Besnÿo, Brassaï, Bill Brandt, Robert Capa, Saul Leiter and Robert Frank. It is thanks in part to this partnership with Baker McKenzie that the Rijksmuseum can offer a high-quality overview of developments in international photography. In 2017, the Rijksmuseum mounted the exhibition Star-Vu. Ten Years of Photo Acquisitions Thanks to Baker McKenzie, comprising a selection of 30 acquisitions made thanks to Baker McKenzie.

The Rijksmuseum photography collection

The Rijksmuseum photography collection comprises some 150,000 images from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, from the Netherlands and abroad. It is the ambition of the museum to be able to represent the entire history of photography in the form of acknowledged masterpieces by top photographers, and through photography in advertising, fashion, journalism and academia. The Rijksmuseum photography collection has been assembled with the generous support of the museum’s partner Baker McKenzie, private donors and international funds. The Rijksmuseum photography collection is now a leading international collection. Many of the objects in the collection are unique or exceptionally rare vintage copies.

Vital support

The Rijksmuseum is grateful for all the forms of support that it has received in this difficult period. It is clearer than ever that government funding, contributions from the business community and funds, as well as gifts, legacies and the support of Friends are, and will remain, essential for the Rijksmuseum.
