Abstract

This book explores the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of ancestral portraits in Kinmen, a region where traditional Chinese values such as ancestor worship remain deeply rooted. As an educational publication produced in conjunction with local heritage preservation efforts, the book aims to foster public understanding and appreciation of ancestral imagery as both familial symbols and cultural artifacts. Through accessible explanations and visual examples, it introduces readers to the various forms of ancestral portraits--from traditional ink paintings and charcoal drawings to early photographs--and explains their stylistic features, symbolic meanings, and roles within local society.
