Abstract

"Pan Hsiao-hsia spent decades documenting the tribes of Lanyu and observing the lower social strata inhabiting Wanhua's streets. The imagery he produced demonstrated his incisive observations of the age in which he worked and the people around him. As part of his newspaper work, Pan recorded the dramatic social changes underway in Taiwan in the 1980s. He systematically documented stories about political victims, indigenous people, and Taiwanese writers and artists. In the process, he showed photography's value in presenting a picture of society's margins, the changing times, and the importance of justice and human rights.
