Self-reflective: Hendrik & Paula Kerstens

- Hendrik and Paula Kerstens
Abstract
A plastic shopping bag, a vacuum cleaner hose or a piece of aluminum foil. That's all you need, Hendrik Kerstens seems to be saying with his photos. A cake border becomes a collar, a lampshade a hat. He plays with the characteristics of Dutch portrait painting in the seventeenth century, in which the everyday was elevated to art. The photos made by Kerstens of his daughter Paula to record her childhood have become world-famous icons. The series in which she takes center stage is increasingly about the old game in front of the mirror, where new looks, styles and roles are always tried out. Paula, now an adult, is now the director of her self-image. And the Kerstens, now a family business, continues to develop every day. Exhibition: Museum Hilversum, The Netherlands (9.4-25.6.2023)
