Abstract
"Twentieth-century America's most famous artist, Andy Warhol, liked to say of himself, "I am from nowhere." The nowhere he referred to was the birthplace of his Carpatho-Rusyn parents. That nowhere is actually somewhere -- a historic region in the geographical heart of Europe known as Carpathian Rus', or simply Ruthenia. Out of nowhere: the art of Carpathian Rus' presents the remarkable yet virtually unknown body of art by over 60 painters and sculptors spanning the period from 1800 to the present. The analytical approach of the narrative focusses on stylistic matters and on the cultural context in which a given artist worked. That context was central Europe and the political entities that ruled Carpathian Rus' since the outset of the nineteenth century."-- Provided by publisher.
