Abstract

The first photographic pictures, which Louis Daguerre presented in Paris in 1839, were greeted with rapturous enthusiasm. They appeared to represent the new truth and the public gazed at the reflecting silver images as if they were small miracles. This volume illustrates clearly the development of the world-changing medium into the last third of the nineteenth century by means of an ambitious private collection covering the early years of photography. Accompanied by well-researched essays, it is a story that has lost none of its powerful effect to this day--Back of cover.
