Abstract

Situated at the intersection of a history of knowledge, a sociology of professions, and a history of gender, this book offers a history of art in France viewed from the perspective of women. Over nearly two centuries, it unfolds in three stages: the time of breakthroughs where women experimented with ways of writing before art history became a science (before 1900), the time of legitimation which is based on the need to work on reserved or neglected areas to better prepare their entry (1900-1945), the time of expansion where many fields are occupied thanks to an expertise which is now more widely and equitably shared (1945-1970).
