Abstract
Since 2013, the city of Kyoto undergoes a transformation each spring as KYOTOGRAPHIE unfolds. Co-directed by Lucille Reyboz and Yusuke Nakanishi, the festival transforms temples, machiya townhouses, and modern architectural spaces alike into immersive exhibition venues. Through collaboration with local architects and artisans, unique scenography is crafted to bring contemporary photography into public spaces, connecting audiences with new ways of perceiving both the work and their surroundings. This retrospective publication provides an in-depth look at the history, philosophy and curatorial approach of one of Japan’s biggest photography festivals.
