Abstract
"Far more than by his protestant roots Dutch master Johannes Vermeer was influenced by the Jesuits in his hometown. In order to marry a Catholic girl Vermeer had to convert to the Catholic faith. After the wedding the couple moved in with Vermeer's mother-in-law, where they became neighbours to the Jesuits of Delft. New findings prompted Jesuit scholars Dries van den Akker and Paul Begheyn to update and rework their earlier book on Johannes Vermeer and the Jesuits in Delft. Their revised edition, published on the occasion of the most comprehensive exhibition ever of Vermeer's work, throws new light on his painting: the light of the Catholic and Jesuit background in Delft."
