Camille Claudel & Bernhard Hoetger: emancipation from Rodin

  • Alternate title

    Camille Claudel and Bernhard Hoetger

Abstract

"An exhibition in 1905 at the Paris gallery of Eugène Blot celebrated two aspiring artistic talents: Camille Claudel (1864-1943) and Bernhard Hoetger (1874-1949). Common to both sculptors was the endeavour to gain creative recognition by pulling away from the master of French sculpture, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). In Paris, the cradle of Modernism, both this Frenchwoman and the German ten years her junior developed an artistic vitality that drew international acclaim at the time and continues to resonate today"--From page [4] of cover. "For the first time since 1905, an exhibition reunites the works of two artists whose biographical and creative paths crossed several times in Paris"--Excerpted from page 10.
