Afterglow: Frederic Church and the landscape of memory
By
Abstract
Frederic Church gained fame and fortune with his large, panoramic landscapes, which were public spectacles seen by thousands. This exhibition innovatively highlights his lesser-known works: intimate landscapes memorializing the dead, whose primary audience was often a handful of individuals. Church painted these memorial landscapes throughout his career, crystallizing nineteenth-century America's pursuit of spiritual transcendence through the natural world. For Church and his family, this ideal was vividly realized at Olana, his Hudson Valley home and designed landscape. Today, Olana remains largely unchanged, enduring as Church's quintessential landscape of memory."--From page [4] of cover.
