Woman Peeling an Apple
Cornelis Bisschop (1630-1674), oil on panel, 1667
A maidservant has kicked off her slipper and is peeling an apple, her broom leaning idly beside her. Bisschop placed her in the entrance hall, on the threshold between inside and outside. A tableau unfolds behind her: a glass rests on the table, two keys dangle from a cord, and paintings adorn the wall. There is also a small bird in a cage, forming a contrast with the birds fluttering about freely outside.
