Two Courtiers Following the Latest Edict
Abraham Bosse (mentioned on object), 1633
In 1633, Louis XIII outlawed clothing that was embellished with lace cutwork (reticella) or embroidered with silver and gold thread. The male courtier in the left print tells us that he is happy to adopt a more sober look. He lets his servant take the old garments to a secondhand shop. The female courtier, however, is very upset: she wants to enhance her natural beauty with fine clothing. Why should she be punished for that?
