Towing the Reed by Boat

Peter Henry Emerson (1856-1936), from: Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads, 1886, platinum print, 1885-1886

Used in the construction of houses, reed was an important product in East Anglia. Emerson shows how the reed was harvested and processed in various photographs in Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads. Here we see a man on a towing path pulling a fully loaded boat. This more sociological angle typifies Emerson’s publications.
