Tiger Seen from the Rear

Tiger. China, c. 1700. Gao Qipei (1660-1734). Colours and ink on paper. Tigers were favourite theme of the eccentric painter Gao Qipei. Here he depicts a tiger in an uncharacteristic pose: a tired, shabby animal, quite unaware that anyone has managed to get this close.
