The Mirour of the most faire, famous and moderne Curtizanes of theese tymes

Crispijn van de Passe II (1597-1670), engraving, 1630

Gentlemen are choosing a courtesan. The album has 40 portraits of the ‘most beautiful,’ mainly highborn prostitutes of the day, with descriptions in three languages. In his dedication to the reader, Van de Passe covered him-self by giving a phoney place of publication and claiming to offer an overview of changing fashion. He also denounces consorting with prostitutes. This notwithstanding, the publication was a great success.
