The Garden and Coach House of 524 Keizersgracht in Amsterdam

Hendrik Keun (mentioned on object), 1772

Nicolaas Doekscheer, the occupant of 524 Keizersgracht, had a lavish Rococo-style coach house built in back of his garden. He and his partner Hendrik Steenbergen, both pictured, financed fifteen plantations in Berbice, Demerary and Essequebo (all three part of presentday Guyana, South America). Their loans enabled plantation owners there to set up their coffee, cotton and sugar businesses. In turn, the interest went to Doekscheer and Steenbergen in Amsterdam.

Description
De stadstuin en het koetshuis behorende bij het perceel Keizersgracht 524, Amsterdam, destijds bewoond door Nicolaas Doekscheer en Elisabeth Groen. Het koetshuis is Kerkstraat 61. Tuinhuis met een gevel versierd met beelden in nissen voorstellende Hercules en Ceres (?). In de ornamentale tuin met zonnewijzer zijn verschillende personen, waaronder de eigenaars, hun erven Hendrik (op de voorgrond) en Reynier (die fluit speelt) Steenbergen, een tuinman en een dienstmeid.
