The Descent from the Cross

Pieter de Grebber (mentioned on object), 1633

Pieter Fransz. de Grebber (c. 1600 - c. 1653).The Descent from the Cross, 1633. The Haarlem-born Catholic painter Pieter de Grebber made this altarpiece in 1633 for the Church of St Gommarus and St Pancras in the Breedstraat in Enkhuizen. Pieter de Grebber was related by marriage to Augustinus de Wolff - pastor of the parish and the man who commissioned the work: De Wolff's brother was married to the artist's sister Maria Fransdr. de Grebber, who was herself a painter. She had painted a portrait of her brother-in-law in 1631. The painting is shown here in its original frame. The work is not in the best of conditions - the varnish has yellowed and become opaque. Purchased from H.J. Dierenbach, pastor of the Old Catholic Church in Enkhuizen, 1907.

    Commissioned by the priest Augustinus de Wolff for the Church of St Gummarus, Enkhuizen, 1633;{W.H. de Boer, _Sint Gommer en Sint Pancras: Klooster, kerk en klerus in Enkhuizen_, Enkhuizen 1988, p. 25.} purchased from Henricus Petrus Dievenbach (1834-1921), priest of the Church of Sts Gummarus and Pancratius,{Note RMA. The priest’s name was wrongly given as H.J. Dierenbach in previous Rijksmuseum catalogues.} by the museum, through the mediation of the dealer ‘M.S.’, Monnickendam, November 1907{The painting is described in the catalogue for the sale, Amsterdam (F. Muller), 26 November 1907, no. 1370, so the Rijksmuseum probably bought it just before the auction. On its acquisition see also W.H. de Boer, _Sint Gommer en Sint Pancras: Klooster, kerk en klerus in Enkhuizen_, Enkhuizen 1988, p. 80.}
