The Beheading of Egmont and Horne

The counts of Egmont and of Horne are among the most important nobles in the Netherlands. Immediately following Alva’s arrival they are imprisoned and accused of high treason, lese-majesty, and supporting the Protestants.Their execution takes place on 5 June 1568 in Brussels’ Grand-Place. News of their beheading travels beyond the Netherlands via prints and is met with great revulsion.
