Standing Donkey

Karel du Jardin (1626-1678), black chalk, with grey wash, c. 1653

Throughout his career, Karel du Jardin was fascinated by Italianate landscapes and classical ruins. Moreover, the Italian animal kingdom did not escape his notice, as is clear from this drawing of a heavily laden donkey. This type is found in southern Italy, as can be seen from the broad, worn hooves resulting from climbing up cliffs.
