Snails

attributed to Anselmus Boëtius de Boodt (1550-1632), point of brush and brown ink, with watercolour, heightened with white, 1596–1601

Most snails live in the sea, some in fresh water while other representatives, like these sixteen, on land. That different (land) species are depicted here is especially evident from the diverse shapes and colours of the snails’ shells. Exactly which ones they were was probably indicated in an accompanying legend which corresponded with the numbers.
