Giambologna, Antonio Susini, c. 1600

Around 1600 Giambologna was considered the most famous sculptor active in Europe. The detailing of this polychromed plaster statue closely resembles that of his bronze self-portrait displayed nearby. Both versions would have been made from the same wax model.

    Giambologna heeft zichzelf geportretteerd met baard en snor, gedeeltelijk kaalhoofdig; het hoofd is iets naar rechts gewend. Hij draagt een wambuis met ronde knopen en een geplooide kraag. Hieroverheeneen naar links dichtgeslagen mantel met plat liggende kraag; op zijn borst de pauselijke onderscheiding van de Cavaliere di Cristo. Onderaan de mantel een naar onderen uitstekend inzetstuk ter bevestiging.
