Rings

attributed to Johann Heinrich Schepp, c. 1775 - c. 1788

Before the 19th century, men wore different types of rings to underline their power, wealth and prestige. The wearers of these particular rings were a bishop of the Catholic Church, a Dutch diplomat, and an administrator in Stadholder William V’s treasury. Today, wedding rings and signet rings still indicate their wearers’ social status, but often in more austere forms.
