Reclining Venus

attributed to Lambert Sustris (c. 1515–after 1568), Venice, c. 1540–1560, oil on canvas

Born in Amsterdam, Sustris spent most of his career in Italy. In Venice, he was a close associate of the leading painter Titian. In this work, Sustris used as a model one of Titian’s most celebrated paintings, the so-called Venus of Urbino, but he gave his figure an elegant, more mannered pose.
