Prince Maurice at the Battle of Nieuwpoort, 2 July 1600
Pauwels van Hillegaert (signed by artist), c. 1632 - c. 1640
Prince Maurice at the battle of Nieuwpoort, 2 July 1600, by Pauwels van Hillegaert, first half 17th century. It was at Nieuwpoort, on the Flemish coast, that the Dutch won their first major victory over a Spanish army on foreign soil. No advantage could be taken of the success, however. The army was too far from its home base and was forced to return. In the centre foreground: Prince Maurice, the Dutch commander, in armour on horse back. He is wearing an orange sash. The battle is shown in the second plane. Above, a golden sky looms.
