Explanatory note

  • De prent is elders toegeschreven aan Anne Claude Philippe Caylus op basis van de stilistische overeenkomst met diens oeuvre en het bestaan van een signatuur op een andere versie van deze prent in de Herzog August Bibliothek (zie HAB A 23032). Deze toeschrijving is echter zeer onwaarschijnlijk omdat Anne Claude Philippe Caylus in 1765 overleed, maar liefst 13 jaar voor de vermelde datering op deze prent. De signatuur van Caylus op de andere versie in Wolfenbüttel is daarom waarschijnlijk vals. Er bestaat ook een mogelijkheid dat 'Caylus" een andere, tot op heden ongeïdentificeerde, prentmaker is.
