Rombout Verhulst, in or after 1677 - in or before 1681

Rombout Verhulst modelled this portrait in clay while he was designing Michiel de Ruyter’s large tomb monument for the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. The sculptor thoroughly studied painted portraits of the admiral for this commission. Verhulst kept this modello in his own possession until his death.

  • Description

    Het hoofd met gesloten ogen, driekwart naar links gewend, vertoont imperiale en knevel; op de linkerwang een wrat. Het golvende haar valt tot op de schouders. Boven het harnas steekt een geplooid kraagje uit. Het stuk eindigt even onder de hals.
