Getting started with the collection:
Portrait of Wilhelmina Hillegonda Schuyt and Joachim Rendorp
Jean-Etienne Liotard (signed by artist), 1757
Shortly after their marriage, this couple had themselves portrayed by Jean-Etienne Liotard, arguably the leading portraitist of his day. Shortly after the completion of these likenesses, Rendorp would become director of the Sociëteit van Suriname, an institution that perpetuated colonisation and slavery. In 1787, their house was plundered during protests. Liotard regularly worked on parchment, especially in combination with pastel chalk, whereby his portraits make a soft and luxurious impression.
