Portrait of Tonia Stieltjes-Milgens

attributed to Jan Sluijters, 1919

Tonia Milgens, a former trade union leader and champion of women’s rights, is here portrayed as a modern woman. She wears a fashionable headband that pushes her dark hair over her right eye. Sluijters met Milgens in 1918 or 1919 and asked her to model for him in his studio, most likely for a fee.
