Portrait of Lysbeth van Duvenvoirde

‘Long have I yearned for the man who would open his heart.’ With these words, inscribed in Middle Dutch on the S-shaped banderole, Lysbeth van Duvenvoirde expressed her feelings for her husband. She was from a noble Dutch family and married the knight Simon van Adrichem in 1430. In this portrait she is wearing her wedding jewellery: a necklace, five rings, and a belt with little bells.

Description
Portret van Lysbeth van Duvenvoorde (gest. 1472). Staande, tot de enkels, naar rechts. In de linkerhand een banderol met inscriptie. Linksboven het familiewapen. Onderdeel van een tweeluik, de verblijfplaats van de rechtervleugel met het portret van haar echtgenoot (in 1430) Symon van Adrichem is onbekend.
Inscriptions / marks
- inscription, on the reverse of the parchment: ‘Afbeeltsel van Juffer Lijsbeth van Duvoorde, Heer Dircks dochter. Sij troude den 19 Meert ao 1430 aen Symon van Adrichem, Ridder Heer Floris soon, en sterff op Ons heeren hemelvaerts Avond ao: 1472, en is begraven in de Beverwijck in t Reguliersconvent voor het H. Cruys Autaer dat hy (Simon) had doen machen(?)’
- coat of arms, upper left: divided vertically, 1, a red lion with blue tongue and claws on a gold field, a blue label across its breast, and on the breast, over all, a silver shield charged with a black cogwheel; 2, three black crescent moons on a gold field
- inscription, on the scroll: ‘Mi verdriet lange te hopen, Wie is hi die sijn hert hout open.’
