Getting started with the collection:
Portrait of Isaac Vogelsang
Cornelis van Noorde (1731-1795), watercolour on parchment, 1754
The baker’s son Cornelis van Noorde was trained as a portraitist. He was a key figure in the Haarlem art world and immortalized many colleagues, including the painter Isaac Vogelsang. Vogelsang’s career did not get off the ground in the Netherlands and he therefore tried his luck in England at an early age, for which he was harshly criticized. He died in London in 1753. Van Noorde made this portrait of him shortly thereafter.
