Portrait of François Langlois
Jean Pesne (1623-1700), after Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), etching, 1645-1699
This is François Langlois, who made his living in Paris in the first half of the 17th century as an engraver, print publisher, bookseller and art dealer. He was also a gifted musette player – a type of bagpipe in which air is pumped by means of a bellows. The instrument, which produces a modest sound, was popular at the French court for playing dance music.
