Officers and Other Civic Guardsmen of District XVIII in Amsterdam, under the Command of Captain Albert Dircksz Bas and Lieutenant Lucas Pietersz Conijn

Govert Flinck (signed by artist), 1645

Govert Flinck (1615 - 1660). The company of Captain Alber t Bas, 1645. Gover t Flinck has arranged his subjects in a circle around Captain Albert Bas. He did not have a great deal of choice, due to the fixed dimensions of his painting. The size was dictated by the spot for which the work was intended: the relatively narrow space next to the fireplace in the Kloveniersdoelen. The Amsterdam civic guard had recently expanded its headquarters, and the walls of the enormous new doelenzaal or militia hall were decorated with six large civic guard paintings. In addition to this work by Flinck, they included the Night-watch by Rembrandt and civic guard works by Joachim von Sandrart and Bartholomeus van der Helst; all three are also hanging in this room. Painted for the Grand Hall of the Kloveniersdoelen (headquarters of the crossbowmen's civic guard), Amsterdam. On loan from the city of Amsterdam, 1885.
