Nagasaki Bay

attributed to Kawahara Keiga, ink and pigments on silk, c. 1833-1846

On the left is the fan-shaped island of Dejima with Dutch and Chinese merchant ships in the bay. There are several known copies of this picture, which Dutch visitors bought as souvenirs of Japan. By the time the Bauduins arrived, this situation no longer existed. A fire in 1859 destroyed many of the buildings.
