Musicians in an Interior

Leonaert Bramer (1596-1674), brush in black and grey ink, c. 1650

In the 17th century, being able to play several instruments was more important than perfectly mastering a single one. While making music together, one could then switch instruments. This drawing is probably a design for a mural intended for a music room. Unfortunately, we do not know where or if it was executed; almost all of Bramer’s interior paintings have been lost.
