Explanatory note

Entry
Patent model of a pile driver for cross-piling. It consists of a slide with a sheave at the top, held at an angle of 45 degrees with two legs. The slide has two braces to keep the pile in place. Rammer and tackle are missing. The piles used with this pile driver were flat planks, described as ‘plates’, and were rammed into the ground at an angle of 45 degrees.
The model maker of the Dutch Navy Petrus van der Loo (1806-1864) invented this method of piling for buildings, railways, slipways and so on.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 49. This type of pile foundation was less likely to shift. In 1840 Van der Loo obtained a ten-year patent for his invention. According to Obreen the model was only made once, in 1855, together with a model of the foundation with cross-piling (NG-MC-49).2J.M.
