Getting started with the collection:
Women’s Ball at the Lido in Amsterdam
Catrien Ariëns (1944), gelatin silver print, 1979
A Women’s Ball was organised by the bookstore Xantippe, café Saarein, and printing house Virginia – all establishments by and for women – in Amsterdam in 1979. The dress code was ‘typically feminine’: cocktail dresses and stiletto heels and so on. The photographer here caught a moment of intimacy between two of the guests.
