Tavern Games

Adriaen van Ostade (1610–1685), pen and brown ink, brush and grey and brown ink, over black chalk, c. 1677

Customers at a tavern are sitting outside and enjoying the food and drink. Under the long roof, two men are playing a version of shuffleboard, pushing discs along the table. On the left in the foreground is one end of a bowling green. This sketch, which Van Ostade made in c. 1677, formed the basis for a finished watercolour as well as an oil painting.
