To our knowledge this is the only extant example of a chintz cap. In the Netherlands such caps were worn by gentlemen indoors. Since the model was unknown in India, the pattern – along with instructions for painting the design partly on the front and partly on the back of the piece of cotton – had to be sent from the Netherlands to India.

De muts was in 1925 in het bezit van, de op dat moment in New York woonachtige, S.C. Bosch Reitz. Prof. jhr. dr. J. Six ging op 20 maart 1925 verkleed als Argan (Moliere, 'Malade imaginaire') naar het gekostumeerde Casinobal op de Keizersgracht 464. Bosch Reitz schrijft hem hierover: 'The Century Association/ 7 west forty-third street/ New York 25 maart 1925/ Waarde Jan, Dat je de chamberlouk (BK-1978-865) op het gecoste bal draagt vind ik heel best, het idee is heel gelukkig en zal zeker succes hebben, had ik geweten dat je als "de gewaande zieke" heenging zou ik je gezegd hebben dat ik een dagslaapmuts of kamermuts heb, het kopdeksel dat men droeg voor de pruik opgezet werd, van gebloemd gedrukt katoen. Het zou er goed bij gepast hebben, maar het is nu te laat.' (met pentekeningetje van de muts), Collectie Six Amsterdam, inv. 51531.
